Choose a switch by the number of cameras and their total power draw: there should be more PoE ports than cameras, and the budget in watts must exceed the sum of all camera loads, since PTZ cameras and cameras with heaters need 20–30 W each. Standard PoE works up to 100 m, ePoE up to 800 m, and Hi-PoE/802.3bt delivers 60–90 W per port. The uplink port connects the switch to the recorder or router: take a gigabit uplink for more than 8 cameras and SFP fibre for long runs. ASB Trade sells switches by the piece at wholesale prices with next-day delivery in Tbilisi.

Frequently asked questions

What is the PoE budget and how do I work it out?

It is the total power the switch can deliver across all PoE ports together. Add up the maximum draw of your cameras (typically 5–8 W for fixed, 20–30 W for PTZ) and take a switch with a 20–30% margin.

Do I need a managed switch for cameras, or is unmanaged enough?

For a simple system of 8–16 cameras an unmanaged switch is enough — plug in and it works. A managed or cloud-managed model makes sense when you split the network into VLANs, control ports remotely or watch several sites from one panel.

How far does PoE reach and what does ePoE add?

Standard PoE over twisted pair is rated for 100 m. ePoE technology, paired with Dahua ePoE cameras, covers up to 800 m on one cable, so a distant camera needs no intermediate switch or extender.
