Fasteners are chosen by the base material and the load: wood needs a wood screw, thin metal a sharp-tipped self-tapper, concrete and brick a wall plug or an anchor. In a size, the first number is the diameter and the second the length in millimetres; the length must exceed the thickness of the part being fixed plus the depth the fastener sinks into the base. Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a wall plug and an anchor?

A wall plug is for light loads such as shelves, clips and light cabinets. An anchor locks into the hole and holds heavy items, so it is used in concrete for heavy fixings.

What does a size like 4.2×32 mean?

The first number is the screw diameter and the second is the length in millimetres. 4.2×32 is a screw 4.2 mm in diameter and 32 mm long.

Can I buy fasteners by the piece?

Yes, fasteners are sold both by the piece and by the pack. For large volumes the pack is more convenient.
