How to build an Ajax alarm system for a flat or a house

Hub, motion, opening and glass-break detectors, fire and leak detectors, keypad, siren and app: which Ajax set a flat needs, which a house needs, and who installs it.

The hub is the centre of the system

The hub receives detector signals over the Jeweller radio protocol, talks to the app and the security company and reports alarms. It connects to the internet via Ethernet and uses SIM cards as a backup; Hub 2 Plus also has Wi-Fi. A built-in battery keeps the system running during a power cut.

For a flat, Hub 2 is enough: it supports MotionCam photo-verification detectors, which send a series of pictures on alarm. For a large house with several groups, outdoor detectors and cameras take Hub 2 Plus, with more devices, groups and users. The hub is placed out of sight of the front door but with good signal.

Intrusion detectors

MotionProtect is a motion detector with pet immunity, mounted in a room corner so it 'looks' at the entrance. MotionCam does the same and also sends photos: you see who came in. DoorProtect is an opening detector for the front and balcony doors and ground-floor windows; the Plus version also reacts to impact and tilt.

GlassProtect listens for the sound of breaking glass and is needed where windows face the street or a balcony; CombiProtect combines motion and glass break in one housing. For the yard, terrace and approach to the house there are MotionProtect Outdoor and DualCurtain Outdoor, which work in any weather and warn before anyone reaches the door.

Fire, smoke and leaks

FireProtect and FireProtect 2 react to smoke and a sharp rise in temperature; the version with a CO sensor also detects carbon monoxide from a boiler or fireplace. These detectors work at all times, whether the system is armed or not, and sound their built-in siren. They go on the ceiling in bedrooms, the corridor and near the kitchen.

LeaksProtect is placed on the floor under the washing machine, water heater, sink and in the bathroom: on contact with water it notifies you at once. Paired with a WaterStop valve, the hub shuts the water off itself. For a flat with neighbours below it is a sensible addition.

Control: keypad, key fob, app

You arm and disarm from the Ajax app on the phone, from a KeyPad by the entrance (with a code, or a Pass card or Tag fob on KeyPad Plus and TouchKeyPad), with a SpaceControl key fob or a Button, which doubles as a panic button. In the app you set up groups (for example 'house' and 'garage'), night mode, which keeps only the perimeter armed, and scenarios.

All users get push notifications naming the detector that triggered; with a monitoring-station connection the signal goes there too. HomeSiren indoors and StreetSiren outdoors deter the intruder; StreetSiren has an LED frame visible from the street.

Installation and who does it

The system is wireless: detectors mount on SmartBracket with double-sided tape or screws, batteries last for years, and the Jeweller radio link covers a house and plot; if the signal does not reach a far wing or garage, a ReX extender is added. Setup is in the app: devices are added by QR code, assigned to rooms and groups, and signal strength is checked on the spot.

Many people set up a basic flat kit themselves following the in-app instructions. A house with outdoor detectors, several groups and a monitoring-station connection is better left to an installer. ASB Trade is the official Ajax Systems distributor in Georgia: we stock the whole range, will put a kit together for your floor plan and suggest an installer.

Sample kits

Flat: Hub 2, MotionProtect or MotionCam for the hallway and living room, DoorProtect on the front door, KeyPad by the entrance, HomeSiren, FireProtect in the corridor, LeaksProtect under the washing machine. House: Hub 2 Plus, DoorProtect on every entrance, MotionCam in the main rooms, MotionProtect Outdoor on the approach to the house, GlassProtect on ground-floor windows, StreetSiren on the facade, FireProtect in bedrooms, LeaksProtect in the boiler room, ReX if needed. A shop or office follows the same logic: opening detectors on doors and windows, motion in the sales area and stockroom, a keypad with cards for staff.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a security company for Ajax to work?

No. The system works fully with the app: notifications, MotionCam photos and the siren. A monitoring-station connection adds a response team on alarm.

Do I have to run wires?

No, the detectors are wireless and battery-powered. Only the hub needs a cable, for power and optionally Ethernet.

How many detectors for a two-room flat?

Usually two motion detectors, one or two opening detectors on doors, a keypad, a siren and a fire detector are enough; a leak detector is optional.
